Legal Services Team

Comprised of solicitors and paralegals the legal unit of NTSCORP is responsible for managing the legal aspects of native title claims.

The legal team assist in securing the recognition of native title rights and interests in the following ways;

Preparing claims in anticipation of satisfying the Registration Test of the National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT)

Taking witness statements from traditional owners is an essential aspect of this task. The legal unit works closely with our community facilitators and researchers in this task.

Assisting in the establishment of Aboriginal corporations under the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976 and from July 2007 the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006

Assisting Traditional Owners in negotiating agreements with the State Government, private interests and mining companies

These agreements can take a variety of forms, including an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA)

Attending mediation conferences convened by the NNTT with a view to assisting in the resolution of matters outside of a traditional court room environment.
